Inside CardPointe: CardConnect's processing platform
CardPointe is the name behind the CardConnect experience most merchants actually touch day to day: the gateway, the virtual terminal, the reporting dashboard and the mobile app.
What CardPointe actually is
CardPointe is CardConnect's unified processing platform, first rolled out in 2016 as a replacement for the company's earlier back-end systems. Rather than being a single app, it is better thought of as a layer that ties together several tools: a payment gateway for routing transactions, a virtual terminal for manually keyed or phone orders, a reporting dashboard, and a mobile app for card-present sales away from a fixed counter.
The platform is designed to accept a wide range of payment types in one place — chip and PIN or signature cards, contactless tap payments, magnetic-stripe swipes, manually entered card numbers, and ACH bank transfers — so a merchant with several sales channels isn't juggling separate systems for each.
The core building blocks
- Gateway — routes and authorizes transactions from a website, app or terminal to the card networks and back.
- Virtual terminal — a browser-based screen for keying in card-not-present payments, useful for phone and mail orders.
- CardPointe app — a mobile app paired with a card reader for taking payments away from a fixed register.
- Reporting dashboard — a single place to see transactions, batches and settlement across locations.
- Recurring billing — scheduled charges against a securely stored customer payment profile.
Hardware and add-ons
On the hardware side, CardConnect offers plug-and-play terminals that support swipe, dip and tap transactions, protected with point-to-point encryption so card data is scrambled the moment it leaves the reader. Because CardConnect also has a relationship with Clover through its Fiserv parent, some partners can offer Clover devices alongside CardPointe-branded terminals, giving merchants a choice between a dedicated payments terminal and a fuller point-of-sale system.
One of the more practical add-ons is the Card Account Updater, a background service that checks stored cards on recurring-billing profiles for updates — a new expiration date or reissued number — so subscription and membership charges are less likely to fail simply because a customer's bank sent them a new card.
Built to scale with the business
A common theme in how CardPointe is positioned is that it's meant to grow with a merchant rather than being replaced by it. A single-location retailer adding e-commerce, or a regional chain adding new stores, is meant to be able to extend the same gateway and reporting setup rather than migrating to a different platform at each stage. Whether that holds true in practice depends heavily on the complexity of the integration and which ISO or agent set the account up — which is exactly why it's worth asking pointed questions before signing.
